    Howdy,
I am from Iowa and I collect obsolete currency. I also have an extensive collection of large size notes and quit a few pieces of unciruclated fractional currency. I have tried to get the very best I could get but many of the large size pieces are out of my reach financially. I obtained many of the pieces 20-25 years ago and they were much more affordable then. I went to obsolete currency as I enjoy reading about the history and I can still afford obsoletes.
I was thinking that I would send some of the currency off to PCGS and get it graded. It seems that currency that has been graded by a reputable firm tend to bring more money than raw currency. What are some of your thoughts about having currency graded? PCGS has a platinum program for $250 a year and you can get 15 pieces graded.

Hi and welcome to the kingdom of paper LOL personaly I dont like anything in a slab, but having said that I can understand why if you ar buying high end stuff. You should talk to RickieB about the fractionals etc he has a rather nice collection.
Any chance you could post some scans/pics of your notes fro us to drool over LOL

slabbed coins/currency 'can' auction off for a higher price... unfortunately its usually becuase the buyer is buying the slab and not the coin. I am better at grading currency then coins, so buying the note and not the slab is easier for me. Like De Orc, I also prefer buying raw notes. I have a much smaller buying budget lol, i buy the best i can afford, but unfortunately, that means lower end notes. In the very fine to good or even about good for some of the most expensive notes realm, having the note graded just doesnt make sense. For your collection, from which you mentioned was also the best you could afford, if the notes are the upper end of grading, i might also look for slabbed examples.

De Orc mentioned RickieB. i would certainly take a look at his collection as well. He does have alof of notes, and very few of them are below gem examples. Most members, like De Orc, RickieB, myself and alot of other paper money forum visitors will have a link in their sig to their website where each showcases what they have been able to collect. Several CoinTalker's have quite the collections, so i might suggest to visit some :)

    oops .. did i say welcome :D

With obsolete I guess we are also talking about countries that dont exist anymore? I have got 27 former countries. My latest been The Republic of Biafra.

With Biafra it was interesting to me that the former Apartheid Regime of South Africa (my country) send troops to the Republic to help them fight for their freedom from Nigeria.

Then I have war notes as well from the occupied zones. A Japanese Peso that has been marked by the US Military. And some other zone notes.

Can you tell me if we are talking about the same thing what you have?

If you are looking to sell the currency, I would have it graded. But I will warn you that grading is the opinion, and in the eye of the beholder. Lately I have a few graded notes that I bought as such, but I am just as inclined to by a raw note if I am comfortable with the appearance, smell, limpness test etc. Now why would I mention smell...?

Because with many foreign notes, but now some USA notes, they have been cleaned:

Now in the Long Beach auction for Heritage as this:

I will bet you money that this has some residual smell from the cleaning agent that took the red dye off, but notice also that the note is apparently scrubbed of course in the upper right hand corner. Here is the auction link:
