I work at a coin shop in Cleveland, and recently purchased an obsolete that is unlisted in the Haxby catalog. I tried doing research, and the $1 note of the bank sold on Heritage a while back, but there is absolutely nothing on the $2 note that I bought. The bank is from the Cascade Iron Company, from Negaune, Michigan. Does anyone know how to find an approximate value of these or know anything about them? Thanks!
There are hundreds, probably thousands of obsoletes not listed in Haxby. It would be fun to have a book with every obsolete listed, but I'm afraid it would be thicker than my ceiling is tall, making it inconvenient at best. As far as how to look up those not listed, your guess is as good as mine. I usually look at Heritage first to see if they've listed one, or try doing research on the issuer itself. Guy
There is a book dedicated solely to Michigan obsoletes. It came out many years ago with a second edition from 2-3 years ago. The author escapes me. It may be listed there.
Just because something is not in Haxby or Criswell etc doesn't give it an automatic pass into a great rarity. In fact it might have been overlooked, unreported etc. That out, your note is a pretty desirable one for Michigan collectors - it certainly is not one of the more common notes from that part of the world.
What Year Is This Note? The note is so wrinkled I cannot quite tell the date of this note but it looks like it was issued in 1872. If this is the case then it's not listed in Haxby because Haxby covers only bank notes from 1782 to 1866. Merchant's scrip, etc. are not included in Haxby. You may want to look for one of these two books which may also provide the rarity of the note. Michigan Obsolete Bank Notes And Scrip Notes of the 19th Century - National Bank Notes 1863-1935 Wallace Lee (2007) Obsolete Banknotes And Early Scrip Of Michigan Harold L. Bowen (1985) Unfortunately, I currently don't have these books but hopefully someone else on here who has one of them can help you.
