Hello, As a new coin collector this years New York international numismatic convention was my first. Got a couple of very nice and a couple of so so coins to add to my collection. The first two (nicer) coins are the pillar 8 reales Mexico City mint and a 4 reales from Spain 16th century. The second two are not as nice but still interesting. 3rd is a 8 reales from Spain and last is 2 reales from potosi. I just had to have an affordable potosi. Overall I learned a heck of a lot from this coin show. Just conversing with people and seeing the coins in person gave me a whole different understanding on how people collect and what they look for. I can't wait for the next one. And while u may sometimes pay too dollar you can find a deal and prices are generally fair. I will not be shopping at eBay for coins anymore. There's nothing like seeing a coin in person in all its qualities and flaws. Thanks for looking and feel free to post your coin show acquisitions or sales! Larry
Nice. I like your 1816 eight realies best. I am a big fan of 18th to early 20th century Mexican silver.
They still have that show at the Waldorf? I went three years ago and the place was packed. Not much there for an US collector but world and ancient coin aficionados were in hog heaven.......
Green, Yea they do it every year. It was just this past weekend. Thanks ripely and John. I really like the first two. The second two were more affordable so they are also a nice pick up. And I am really happy to have a potosi even though it is so worn. While I think I did pay top dollar I don't think the prices were outrageous. One good thing that I learned is that I am interested in Spanish colonial period coins. Also, there were Lots of great knowledgeable people I met there.
That goes to show you how everyone's taste or preference ranges. The guy who sold it to me for 100 said it was not a particularly nice piece and didnt have eye appeal. But, I thought it was in fantastic shape for the price.
