All, There are 3 coin collecting groups in my area. I have attended meeting of all the groups and non of the groups do anything to wards educations. Their main focus is the auctions they have at every meeting. After I left one of these meetings the other night I decided that I want to start a Numismatic Society that will focus much more on education. I am looking for this to cover both coins and paper money. My Numismatic Society will have a Library that members can borrow materials from. I envision that we will have a monthly meeting where we will cover an education topic about coins or paper money. In the future I plan on trying to get sponsorship from local dealers. I would also like to be able to hold a nice size show and sale about twice a year. I have most of the details tenatively worked out for the above Society. I just need help finding places that I can get educational coin info that I can use at the meetings. Any suggestion would be great. Clearwatercoins
You're going to have a tough time because of copyright issues. Copying and distributing printed educational information will violate copyright law. So as I see it your choices are limited. You can contact the ANA, make your society an ANA club. Then they will help you with providing educational information. But typically it is pretty basic stuff geared more towards beginners than experiencd collectors. They will however help you arrange seminars and speaking engagements from recognized names in the hobby. But it aint cheap. Another choice would be for you to contact the authors of any printed educational material and get their written permission to copy and distribute their work. You stand a good chance with this idea. Yet another idea would be to contact recognized names yourself, ask them their future travel plans, and see if you can arrange for some of them to stop by and speak, do a little seminar. But that requires alot of work on your part for little success.
If you have a societies name or some type of organization name, you may attempt contacting coin magazines for either free or discounted priced copies. At many coin shows I've attended there are copied on a table that are free of such magazines as Coin World, Numismedia, etc. I asked how come they are free and was told many coin shows just ask and get many copies free so they pass that along to customers. That is my good suggestion. However, I sure hope you live in and/or around an exceptionally honest area. With crime the way it is in many areas, such coin libraries, clubs, etc are marks for a robbery. Criminals would almost assuridely take it that such a Library for coin info would also have coins. Also, remember advertising anything about any monitary items are also open to possible robberies.
