What system is used to catalog US paper money? I know Pick numbers are used for most world paper money, and now that I am adding US paper money to my collection, I thought I should find out what system is used.... and use it...

    Cheers,

There are a couple systems in place to catalog currency. I use the friedberg system for US currency. There is also the Krauss (Pick) numbering system for both US and world. IMHO the friedberg system goes into more depth for the US currency. But for my own cataloging, i will attribute both when both are listed.

Referring to the numbering of US notes in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (the Pick Catalog) as Krause numbers will cause confusion to collectors of these notes in the US. This is because there is a catalog of US currency, The Standard Catalog of US Paper Money which was originally authored by Chet Krause and Robert Lemke. It uses a different numbering system than the Pick Catalog. A US collector would expect Krause numbers to refer to the US catalog not the Pick Catalog.

the standard catalog of US paper money found Here does not contain ANY catalog numbering system. I am not sure if older versions do, as the 26 edition is the first of this book i bought.

Do older versions of this book expand on the numbering systen employed by Krause publication in their World currency books?

The previous editions of the Krause-Lemke Catalog had numbers and cross-referenced the Friedburg numbers. (I have not seen the latest edition.) The notes listed in the Krause-Lemke US catalog did not have the same numbers as the notes listed in the Pick Catalog under the United States.

Most collectors and dealers in the US would use the Friedberg numbers. I do not know anyone in the US who uses Pick numbers for US currency. I have seen them used by dealers outside the US.
