Just wondering what would be the value on an error 2004 penny? It has the nunber 5 on lower left side that continues with other numbers or letters.

It's time to put on your thinking cap. If it was a dropped element, where did it come from? There is no "5" in the date.

Since it's the number 5 you're okay. If it was any other number then you would be PMD!!

So a coin is considered pmd if it has an error on it if it is damaged?

You're not thinking! If it were a "5" along the rim, it would have to come from somewhere. A "dropped element" is the only possible way it could show up on the coin during the minting process, but there is no "5" in the date. If you don't understand what I am saying, then look up "dropped element".

Im assuming either the last two pictures did not post correctly or pmd means any coin that is damaged or has an error and is not in mint condition? Just to clarify, im not talking about the date. Thank you.

    It is not an error!

A coin can have an error, PMD (post mint damage), both or neither. They are not mutually exclusive of one another.

PMD is Post Mint Damage. That means something damaged the coin after it was minted.

Thank you...sorry for so many questions...Just started learning about error coins and thats why im not too familiar with all the terminologies...I guess the number 5 must be something someone imprinted on the side of this penny.

That's okay. We all make mistakes. It's part of the learning process.

That's what most likely happened. Someone put the 5 there after it left the mint (hence post mint damage). Whether it was another human doing it, a squirrel gnawing a number 5 into it or a bolt of lightning searing the number 5 into it, it doesn't make a difference. PMD is PMD.

Just crazy why any one would just mess with a penny or any coin and try tricking people who do there research on stuff like this. I wouldnt buy anything without several people confirming that something is real. Thanks again for your help.

We'll never really know what may have caused this. You shouldn't assume that it was human-made damage. After all, there are billions and billions of pennies in circulation.

By the way, here is a good site for errors......

Yea who knows. Assuming someone did it, it's possible they might having trying to mess with people. Could also be they were just bored. It's a good idea to always check things before spending your money.
