I have a slabed Indian by NTC. I know the top 3 for some collectors are PCGS, NGC and ANACS. How does NTC fare in comparison? Do they grade higher or lower? Harry
Over graded - yes. From my observations, typically 1 to 3 points (MS coins). They are, however, an INDEPENDENT TPG and I know of no instance where they have graded a cleaned coin. But, aside from the 30 odd coins I have from NTC, I would not consider myself an expert on them and my only experience is with Lincolns. My general opinion is that I generally get more coin for the $ with NTC than most other deals I have.
I have a few banging around the safe, some 20's P mints in MS. They generally run 65 on the tag and about 63 in the market, nothing like NNC or SGS or the other wacko graders I crack em out before I sell them
I have seen some stuff that is good from NTC but most is not. You IHC looks nice but the photo is too small to really see. Also I sent a 1926 D Peace Dollar that NGC slabbed MS 61 to NTC just to see what they would call it and it actually came back MS 61. I sent it raw as well so they did not see what NGC called the coin. I would say they are hit or miss at best and normally miss. I always look for there holders at coin shows though because every once in a while you can find on that is on and get it cheap.
I think the rule of thumb is, you buy the coin, not the slab (with some exceptions). I believe your little indian is gorgeous, so who cares what name is on the slab. Ribbit
I've seen some cleaned coins in NTC, but I could say that about The Big Three as well. Personally, I feel NTC is overall very poor. I've seen AU50s called MS63. However, occasionally they'll surprise me. The IHC in the OP actually looks pretty good from what I can tell from that photo.
Here is one of my NTC coins. They graded it MS68. It probably is not a 68, but it is cleaner and better struck than my NGC MS67
I sent a few items to NTC when they first started, and they were dead on for the grades. Not uncs, but circulated pieces. now? Who knows.
I probably would not send any coins to them to be graded. But if you see them at your dealer and you agree with the grade and the price...why not buy them? I have a Morgan in an NTC slab, and it looks to me like the assigned grade. I got it for a fair/decent price.
Here is a Half Dollar slabbed by NTC---this is one that I would grade as Cleaned that they didn't mark. I can't find a pic of the Rev.... Speedy
As one should do with any slabbed coin. Buy the coin based upon your attraction to it with total disregard for the slab. Slabs are only for protection and from what I've seen they all will keep a coin from getting scratched; grades and attributions can be missed for sure using any of them.
A few years back it was easy finding 1964 Proof Accented Hair half dollars in these slabs. It was not on the slab so they could be bought cheap. I lost count of how many of these I picked up. Other than those, I would probably not buy there slab if not able to see it in hand.
