It's pretty much common fact that NTC overgrades coins and even certifies coins that have been cleaned without documenting the same. I'm looking to submit an NTC slabbed coin I have to PCGS. I can do it two ways, submit it in the NTC holder for a crossover with a minimum acceptable grade or send it in raw. 1. NTC to PCGS Crossover-Perhaps PCGS will see the NTC grade and go several points lower. The benefit here is that you can submit a minimum acceptable crossover grade and I'm assuming that if the coin doesn't meet the mimimum crossover grade PCGS won't break the slabb and send it back to you. The theory here is better to keep an overgraded NTC coin rather than a "body bagged Cleaned or Ungradeable coin". The disadvantage seems to be is PCGS will ultimately lower the grade when they see the NTC Slabb. 2. Send the coin in raw. PCGS won't know the coin was graded by NTC and may even give it the same grade. The disadvantage to this is that the coin could come back "body bagged" or receive an extremely low grade. Any Thoughts? Harry
Harry if you know how to grade coins accurately then you wont have this problem. if you need our help we need your pictures you savvy?
Not sure how good the pics are but.. I can retake them in the AM. only a little savvy here. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=38666 Thanks Spock!
o i am tempted to send it in raw but the color looks off to me can you take some pics in natural light?
You know how much you paid for it. I assume it wasn't a true MS-66 price. Equate what you paid to a grade using Coin Values (or whatever) and set that as your minimum crossover grade. That way if it slabs you haven't lost anything. If it doesn't slab they'll probably tell you why. But now you're out your submission and S&H fees. Or use ANACS. That way it will end up in an acceptable slab and you'll get a good idea of what you have even if it comes back in a "DETAILS" slab.
ouiii sorry, I wanted pictures and now I can't give a grade. I have never graded one of those before and would not have a clue where to start .
Why bother to have it graded at all? you know that you have an authentic coin and that it is a beautiful high grade cent. Unless you're planning on selling it, it can sit in the present holder quite nicely. Bruce
True, but I don't like the NTC holder and someday I will sell it. PCGS holders collect higher premiums even with a lower grades.
Harry, The only problem I MIGHT see it recoloring, and you wont be able to see that ( at least from pics ) unless it is cracked and you can look at the rim edges. The way the color looks at the dentils and edges of some details might be a hint. Also, Rlm has had some real good luck with NTC coins getting into NGC holders.
In the old days, all they said was DNC ("did not cross") - no explanation of why, nor estimate of what a PCGS grade would have been had it been submitted raw. Maybe times have changed, but I don't think so. That has never changed !
what a beautiful coin if you dont mind the fees send it in the slab. other then the color it looks ok.
