I just can't seem to help myself when it comes to MA Legionary denarius. I purchased all three knowing I already have decent examples, even though there are a few I have need to upgrade. So here are the newer coins shown with the older examples following.

    Legio XII
    MARCUS ANTONIUS Legion XII 2.jpg

    Legio III
Marc Antony Leg III (2) Denarius.jpg
    Marcus Antonius Leg III.jpg
    Legio VII
    Marcus Antonius Leg VII.jpg
    Marcus Antonius Leg VII 2.jpg

I still need Legio IIII to complete my collection

Pavlos You pick out the big men. I'll make them brave!

Very nice coins, I like the Roman Republic coins a lot, they have more of the Greek coin vibe to them compared to the Imperial coins which mainly have just portraits at the obverse.

For Legio IIII you also buy a double? ;)

I wish. I have Legio IV, but not the IIII version.

  10. It looks like the Celator left room for it.

Edit* I didn't really think about it; but posting a photo like this, online, could be viewed as fairly deceiving. Making someone think a LEG IIII of this quality is floating around out there.

    You know you're addicted when . . .

Nice dupes Bing!! I know there is a LEG IIII out there somewhere with your name written all over it.

Good to see you back posting and hope you had a good vacation.

Here's mine. Every example I've ever seen of this legion are all well worn.

Well, I hope my name is not literally written all over it when I finally find one.

MY "vacation" was okay, just too long. Five weeks seemed way too long for me. Besides, my son and his family were suppose to be in their new place by September 1st, but it didn't happen till the day my wife and I left. He and his family were living in a hotel so we never had much time together to do things like the metal detecting we had planned. But it was good to see him and my grandchildren. My three year grandson now speaks and understands three languages. Amazing to me.

As are many of the MA Legionary series.

A question: Within the MA legionary series are there sub types that make you want to have two from the same legion? For example, in my legionary area - Septimius Severus, there are some legions that have standards bearing or lacking small capricorns on the standards.

The above two are Rome mint but the one below is Syrian also for Legion XIIII.

There are even a few coins that have such widely different letter spacings that a specialist might feel the need for examples of both.
LEG XXII widely and evenly spread:

LEG XXII not started until the top and LEG XX packed tightly:

Do collectors of MA legionaries chase such variations or is it pretty much a matter of the numerals and the few specialties names like Speculatorum?

To be honest, at this point I have only been trying to find at least one of each legion or major variation such as Leg XVII and XVII Classicae. There are several like this. In buying duplicates, I am trying to upgrade the poor quality of the series I purchased early on. HOWEVER, now that you mention it, I think I may just look into minor variations while I'm still obsessed on this series.
