This isn't the first time I've seen posts about this topic. If my memory serves me correctly, indeed what you surmise is correct. Also, I believe I may have been a little surprised as to actually what such items sold for.
They are originally called "Pop outs" and were in silver coinage,someone devised a beautiful design of Liberty Popping out of a quarter.it has been used in all kinds of jewelery designs.and most are extremely similar in design. worn on necklaces mainly.very neat stuff.
