This was graded MS-63. To me, it looks like some of the hair lines are slightly flat and the top of the eagle's head and wings look a bit rubbed. In my opinion the grading is a bit optimistic. Any opinions?
You can look on the top of the stars, the ones that are complete, and see nice crisp lines and there are other places with the same detail so the grade is correct or very close to correct. :thumb: Gorgeous Bust! hya: Ribbit Ps: I love Bust coinage cause I can say that and not get my face slapped.
Man I wouldn't know. But this one does look like she likes the finer things in life. Very nice-looking. A little out of my league, though (...hey, a guy can look, can't he? ).
David - that's a very nice looking Bustie. Is that a scratch on the reverse under the wing? Looks like a deep one or is that related to die issues? What is going on the the "B" in Liberty? Might just be a smudge on the slab. For me, if it is a scratch, that would bother me and I would probably pass. I don't know the grading of these so can't comment.
That's a nasty ole die crack. :kewl: That's another reason why I think the grade is correct, since the high points of the die crack are not worn down at all. :thumb: Ribbit
Any opinions on whether it's been cleaned? To me, it has "that look". Note the toning still in some of the hidden areas.
Davidh, beautiful bustie. Have you seen page 189 in the 2009 Red Book. I shows an 1832 with a larger die crack. Your coin is graded the highest listed. Does that mean there is/are none better in existance today? zg
It is a beaut and I see no evidence of cleaning. Very nice coin - from the pictures I like the looks of it.
To me, it doesn't look bright enough to have been cleaned. Personally, I have a hard time deciding between high Au and the grade assigned. If I were fortunate enough to see it in person I could probably tell if there was metal displacement on the high points. Isn't it amazing that these things are around in this state of preservation?
This coin was offered on ebay for "only" $2600. http://cgi.ebay.com/1832-O-101-Larg...14&_trkparms=72:1205|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318
Remember these were made with a screw press , also the dies could be a little worn , there are still many sharp ares on the reverse , seems well graded to me . Maybe a point or 2 off on the high side . rzage
