Was at work and opened a new roll of pennies only to discover a goldish one. Turned out to be Russian, brass 10 kopeks On another note... I just came from a website (claimed to be a coin dealer) that showed Canadian silver dollars and they were calling them loonies! (shakes head) Poor George V would be outraged to be called a loonie..lmao So, I sent them a note...lol Folks...in Canada we have silver dollars and loonies. This is a loonie....... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loonie
Twiggs, can you still get Voyageurs in change? I thought that they were pulled from circulation after the Loonie was introduced. Aidan.
I got 4 Loonies at a yard sale Saturday. Two are 1987, first year of issue. I like the coin even though it's not silver.
I've always been amazed that they 'lost' those dies. Rather expensive mistake, and easily avoidable given the importance of the situation.
fifty cent pieces and silver dollars just are used by stores any more. Guess the coins are just too big and bulky. The silver dollars can still be bought but the mint has turned them into more of a collectors coin than circulation coin. ...come to think of it, I dont think Ive ever seen a silver dollar in circulation. http://www.colonialacres.com/casedsilver.shtml ... the fifty cent piece is legal tender, the bank still carries them, yet if someone gives one in their change, the cashier is usually stumped if it's good or not..lol
we have ones called "lucky" loonies...think 4 all together. Here is a pic of the newest 'lucky' http://www.mint.ca/luckyloonie/default.htm
the dies they lost were the voyageur design meant for the loonies. The design was then changed to a loon to avoid counterfeiting. I still prefer the dollar bill. Now you give back so much in change, it's a wonder peoples pants don't fall down..lol
Twiggs,we also miss the $1 note over here in New Zealand. We have had $1 & $2 coins in circulation since the 11th. of February 1991.Both the $1 & $2 notes were kept in circulation for a few months after that.We are so used to handling $1 & $2 coins over here,as they're always wanted. Aidan.
I've hit about 5 different banks near my workplace (not just different branches), and all I could come away with was 3 measly fifty cent coins. All of them dated 1952-2002. I can't find a bank around me that will even order them for me. And the mint only stopped for 2003 and 2004. They apparently minted a couple hundred thousand in 2005 and again in 2006. I don't care if they're nickel or even nickel-plated steel. I just don't want to pay $1 for a fifty cent piece!
