Okay, so I’ve read the pinned post on doubled die, yet here I am with this quarter and probably more pictures than necessary from every angle possible…but imagine how bored you guys/gals would be if you didn’t have posts like these to pick apart? Lol. Is North Dakota doubled or is it something else? Still very much a newb at this, and with skin thick enough to handle the responses without taking it personal. All help is always appreciated.
I agree. MD. MD can happen anywhere on a coin, but most objective evidence appears on the outer devices and to the rim. It really comes down to the direction of the wobble as to what part of the devices will be burnished and where.
@4LuvOr$$, well, I was a bit bored this morning. A smoky haze and high heat and humidity made me want to stay inside instead of being out in the yard and garden. So, thanks for the photos. I agree with MD, but it's kind of fun to see it anyway. Steve
Keep in mind ATB lettering and dates are incused. The O/NORTH is a great example to look at. The middle is a little island, while the bottom edge was carved away at strike resulting in the MD…imo…Spark
Thank you. And also thx for the detailed information, it helps me understand the difference between DD & MD (but that doesn’t mean I won’t be finding another coin where I end up posting on here with the same question…even if I claim it’s to keep everyone on their toes lol).
Always appreciate the additional agreements (funny though, I kinda prefer the disagreements a little…er…a lot more, lol). Thanks
Addition information is always appreciated- thanks for taking the time to add your 2¢ lol pun intended! Sincerely though, thank you.
Thank you for your answer as well (I can’t help but be confused by how completely nice everyone has been…I even gave the green light that I could take all the word daggers I have seen thrown at questions like mine.) Again, thanks.
At the start, the two kind of look alike. And it's fair to say, that with aging dies and setups coming loose as production occurs, you can have both. You'll often see members calling out one-or-the other, usually the more dominant effect in their eye. Die deterioration also occurs everywhere...but die abrasion/attrition is usually the most notable effect and that occurs around the circumference and affects the outer devices (usually distorted outer devices that begin to blend into the rim, thinning of letters/numbers). Dies that are in their very late die stage (VLDS) have such distortion in the outer devices that they appear to have shelves on both sides of a letter...or number. But that's also a clue. When you see effects occurring on both sides, it's a better chance that it's DD rather than MD. MD occurs on one side of a device.
You definitely sound like you know what you’re talking about! Thanks for the very descriptive and detailed information- I could practically visualize a DD as if I had one flipping its way through every finger along my hand. (And no I’m not coordinated enough to actually make a coin do cartwheels across my hand…) but a great lesson from you told in terms I can understand. Thanks for that!
