Just curious what everyone thinks before I call their state treasurer.
“Will pay FIVE DOLLARS to bearer at the Treasury on or before 1st January 1865.”
It is dated January 1863 in the lower right.
But the red stamp/print at the top says “FUNDABLE IN SIX PER CENT. COUPON BONDS, On or After Jan’y 1, 1866”.

So, it’s after 1866. How much does North Carolina owe me? LOL

They will pay you nothing. You’re not reading the note correctly. It’s payable on coupon bonds which are no longer valid by a law passed over a hundred years ago. You can (could) only get Five dollars payable at the treasury on or before Jan 1, 1865 as stated on the bond itself. It too bad the shape it’s in but it’s worth more to sell as is. Nice try.

    So more than zero.
Auctions and eBay the best sources of info and pricing?

Yes as they should give a fair value if one is willing to pay.
