Hey all, I am very new here and just wanted to share with you guys the coin i just got today through a trade. it is a 1/10 ounce silver NORFED Liberty dollar, i'm sure most of you have heard of it before but for those of you who haven't here is the story behind it: "federal prosecutors were seeking to take roughly $7 million worth or five tons in Liberty Dollars minted in gold and silver seized in 2007 from a warehouse by the FBI" On November 14th, 2007 the offices of Liberty Dollar in Evansville Indiana were raided by the FBI and Secret Service. They simultaneously raided Sunshine Mint in Idaho where the medallions were being minted. They seized all stocks of gold, silver, copper and platinum controlled by Liberty Dollar as well as all books, records and computers they could find. The Liberty Dollar (ALD) was a private currency produced in the United States. The currency was issued in minted metal rounds (i.e. coins), gold and silver certificates and electronic currency (eLD). .The metal was warehoused at Sunshine Minting in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, prior to a November 2007 raid by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Secret Service.Until July 2009" and: "The Liberty Dollars were produced by a now-defunct organization with the unwieldy name "National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve Act and the Internal Revenue Code," or NORFED for short. NORFED's goal, according its founder Bernard Von NotHaus, was to provide an alternative currency to that which is issued by the U.S. federal government: a currency that is backed by gold and silver, and therefore inflation-proof. NORFED has manufactured these coins in various denominations, including $1, $5, $10, and $20 in silver, and $500 in gold." These are VERY rare and valuable coins that are banned from ebay but still legal to own and just the story behind them is what makes them valuable, these coins are quickly disappearing and if you ever get to see one in person you will truly understand just how amazing these coins truly are. I just wanted to show you this coin and tell you the story behind them, i hope you enjoy seeing it, reading about it, and discussing it!
I'm sure CT member Juan Blanco would disagree with you. Unfortunately, he's on vacation from the forum. http://www.cointalk.com/t218929/
interesting, on some sites they are asking over $100 for even the 1/10 ounce ones and some sold, don't know, i guess it all depends who you are selling to
I've bought several in the last 4-6 months and I do like them quite a bit. I think the smallest I have though is a 1/4 oz....
very cool, like someone said in another thread about one, they are really pieces of art, i love the look of them!
