If this is in the wrong forum, my apologies and please move. I am not a coin collector, but i am interested in buying uncommon coins for a specific purpose. My family (Wife, I and 2 kids) started a new hobby called geocaching. I see that it has been discussed on these forums a couple times. If you dont know what it is you can look here: http://www.geocaching.com/faq/ (I am not here to drum up support for geocaching.) We all enjoy the outdoors and the kids enjoy getting little trinkets and things at the different caches. Different people leave different things. You can leave things purchased at a store or things that are different and interesting. (My kids enjoy their arrowheads that they got at one.) The whole point of this is i am interested in buying coins that have little value that are interesting. For a child even pennies are interesting, but coins that are older or from another country- how neat?! When i was younger i collected stamps for a few years. I remember going to a stamp shop and buying a little bag of stamps for very little money, but they were interesting to me. I thought the same thing might be able to happen with coins. Although i understand used stamps probably have less value than money. (I think?) Anyway- my question is does anyone have any recomendations for a place or company where coins could be purchased for little that would be interesting to children? For instance- i found this on eBay: http://stores.ebay.com/The-World-Co...-Lots_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ18QQftidZ2QQtZkm Seems like a reasonable price range. Would it be beneficial to go to a local coin shop? What would you suggest? Thank you for any help. I hope this is an acceptable place to post this series of questions. Stephen2 Akron, OH
Dateless indianhead nickels are cheap and kids love them. Some people carve necklaces out of them. They are cheap because the date has been worn off. Any local coin dealer will probably have them.
Check with local banks for rolls of cent or nickels....especially your own bank for rolls of circulated cent or....?! Clinker
I really appreciate these ideas. I will try a local coin shop. Are there any places anyone might recommend online? Also, wouldnt a dateless buffalo nickel still be worth a nickel?
Local coin stores will be on the pricy side. If you want to go the cheap method, try flea markets. However, some flea markets do and some don't have any coins at all. The best thing you should try is a coin show. Not sure there are any in your area but you can find out by going to Coin World web site. They list almost all the coin shows in the USA. However, I've found they miss lots of the small, local ones so the next thing to try is Google or Yahoo search. Just type in coin shows and the state you live in. That is the place you really want to try. You would find all sorts of coins and many times some dealers will just give a cheap coin to a really young kid as an incentive to become a coin collector. Note there are also many International Coin shows. There you could find coins from everywhere. There is a giant one coming up April 26 to 29th, 2007 at a place called the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare Hotel. If your interested the address is 5440 North River Road, Rosemont Illinois, 60018. Good luck finding what ever you are looking for.
My wife goes geocaching all the time. She use's old coins a lot of the time too. Nothing worth a mint, but sometimes a little silver dime or war nickel. And, Welcome to the Forum. Take Care Ben
I was worried a little about local stores being pricey. Understandably because they have higher overhead i would guess? Also cause im a walking mark! LOL The idea for the coin show sounds good. I checked and it looks like there seem to be many in my area. If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions for buying online, i would glady accept. Thank you!
Well being impatient as i am, the kids and i went to two local shops. The first offered world coins for as little as 10 cents. (Half off regular price.) Nice guy but many of the coins were canadian and not very old. They were already wrapped in the 2x2 and labeled. We went to a second shop and were offered 1 pound for $8. I bought 1 pound and 100 of the 2x2 for 3.50. From what i have seen online the pound seems to be reasonably priced. The coins for the most part are very nice to look at. The kids think they are really neat- and this is what we wanted to accomplish. They counted - there were 89 coins. I also enquired about the dateless nickels and was given a price of $9.00 per 40. Maybe we will get these in the future. My wife worked at a bank up until recently and said they didnt carry much coin at the bank. Thanks for suggestions and help.
