no-star dime, difficult decision

Please view these two dimes & let me know which one you would prefer having in your collection. I blocked-off the numeric grades so just say "PCGS slab" or "NGC slab" & let me know if there is a really compelling reason for your pick. I'll post the numeric grades tomorrow & tell you which one I decided to keep. (I'm stuck with it now anyway).

Please don't worry too much about the grade. I just want to know which one you would like to have in your collection.

    Very best regards,

I can't see a lot of detail on either coin, but I would say the NGC. Even without the grades, based on the pic...I don't care for the toning on the PCGS coin. So, I would have gone NGC simply for the eye appeal.

The NGC dime has much better eye appeal. I would take it.

    A trick question?

There are no obvious defects with either, but the photos don't show a lot of detail. I think that, all other things being equal, everyone would go for the cleaner looking of the two.

Have you seen the two coins in hand? To me they both look nice, but I do not like the dark toning around the rims. On the other hand the blast white coin makes me think dipping - the reason for my question. How do they look in hand? Neither seems to be completely natural. Tough choice. Then again I like them slightly worn. I would probably(if you make me make a choice) with the PCGS coin - as long as nothing is hidden in the dark toning. Just my opinion based off the pictures.

Yes, I've seen both coins in hand & they both have essentially the same details and neither has any obvious problems. The dark one didn't seem to have anything hidden in the toning & the lighter one showed no evidence of harsh cleaning or anything. I appreciate everyone’s comments so keep them coming.

P.S. I'm proud of these two photos because they are really representative of the coins.

Okay - based on your answer then I stick with coin number 2. Blast white just does not seem right on a coin this old. And yes a couple of my older ones could be considered that, but I prefer the second color first. As a matter of fact it looks close to the one I posted not too long ago.

Personal preference, but I like the pcgs coin due to its subdued color. Either coin is very nice, though.

I like the NGC one , it's cleaner , and even with the small pics looks better struck .

BTW , they are both nice .

To me, the first one is superior in many respects - better color, much more luster, better strike, sharper rims... and that's just the obverse !

Love those 1st year seated dimes.

No question in my mind, the NGC coin. Both have been dipped, but the PCGS coin has been over-dipped. It is completely lifeless, flat, all luster has been washed away. The NGC coin however has good remaining luster and much better eye appeal IMO. I wouldn't even look twice at the PCGS coin.

First one. Much as I like Blast White, I'll assume it's been swimming in something other than water.

    Still, eye appeal...

In reality, however, I would pass on both (understanding just how difficult of a coin this is to find attractive in these grades).

I believe the PCGS "photo" is really a scan (from a scanner) and as such I'll wager $1 the luster is SIGNFICANTLY better than pictured....Mike (who thinks he's seen the coin in question somewhere before as well)

Ahhhh - inside information he says !

Could be Mike, but since the slab in the pic seems to have reflectivity and the coin does not; and since toning that dark (what remains anyway) would also likely destroy most luster, I'd have to go with my gut on this one.

    Hello Leadfoot,

Save your dollar. The PCGS coin does have all the luster of the NGC except that it is buried underneath the toning. I really think that these two photos depict the coins as they originally looked in the hand. I know my photos have needed work in the past but these two photos struck me as being pretty good representations. That is why I posted them.

I'll post photos of the slabs & some decent close-ups tomorrow morning. I hope you will all understand which one I went with.

    Very best regards,

Collect89 wants your coin. Very nice large date example.

It's darker than I like, but certainly appears original.
