Does anyone know the exact reason or thinking of the mints that made the Elizabeth I Shilling coins as to Why no stamped year date was incorporated on them??? I realize the many coins from this period are without date stamps on them, it just seems strange why they would choose to leave it off the larger Shilling coins & then decide to squeeze it on the 6 & 3 pence coins!!
My understanding is that the smaller silver was dated to differentiate it from similar size pieces of differing value, along with the obverse rose. With the shilling the module of the coin was enough to mark it out.
