Hello, several weeks ago I recieved an Alabama state quarter. I am a mild collector of silver quarters, and wheat pennies when I come across them in change. However, this state quarter is different when looking at it i found that there was no brown copper ring around the edege. Makes a different sound that a silver quarter when dropped also . Any information on this coin would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ~ James.
James, can you please post some photos of the coin in question? It will help in identifying the piece. Aidan.
James: First, welcome. Second: "Makes a different sound that a silver quarter when dropped also" Is the sound kind of like a thud? It is possible that you have a counterfeit coin.
Bnwpics, If the State Quarter you have has a "P" or "D" Mintmark, then it is a Business Strike! A Silver State Quarter would have an "S" Mintmark and would have come out of a Silver Proof State Quarter or a Silver Proof Set. More than likely, all you have is a State Quarter with a Copper core that was bonded to an overly large Nickel-Copper Clad layer which covers the area that should show the separation of the two Clad layers and the Copper core. to CoinTalk James. I'd actually made a slight wager that that is a correct assessment. Partially or fully obscured copper centers are not really that uncommon.
