Hello! I'm new to the forum, and I collect coins and paper money. I've been collecting little by little for the last few years. My family was pretty bad financially, so my prospects weren't great. However, my dad recently got a job, so now my family's financial future is looking much better - and so is my collection's future. I decided to come onto this forum, mainly for one thing - I have a very interesting coin and I would like to know the value of it. It's a 1912 5 cent coin, and is in relatively good shape for being so old. You can still see a lot of the hair on Ms. Liberty's head. The only problem is a gaping hole on the right side - I imagine this puts a pretty big dent in the value. So does anyone have any idea how much it would be worth? Thank you very much, and I look forward to learning a lot on here! ~ SuperEgo
The hole makes it worth the five cents...damaged coins hold little if any premium unless they are gold in my opinion. RickieB
Didn't people use to put holes in coins and hang them on a thread on their door? http://www.coinworld.com/news/041805/bw_0418.asp Here is a discussion on why they did it. http://www.fleur-de-coin.com/coinforum/forum_posts.asp?TID=212
Before giving up, look on the reverse at the 7 o'clock position, between the "dot" and the rim, for a mint mark, either a D or a S? If it has a mint mark, then even though it has a hole, it's worth more than 5 cents. Ribbit Ps: Welcome to CoinTalk! :hail:
Sorry you nickel probably isn't worth much. But if you're a collector you should stick around. This is a great place to learn, share and interact with other collectors. Welcome to cointalk
No mint mark, sorry! I'm keeping it though, as a necklace. I collect coins mostly for their sentimental value to me, rather then their financial value. I'll definitely be staying around, I plan on learning a lot here! Thanks for the welcome.
