A few months ago, I heard the new nickels were to hit circulation in March. I haven't seen any. Are they out? Also, I read a forum about a 2005 nickel design and saw the picture. How many kinds of nickels are to be made? The state quarters alone are giving me a headache. Are the design changes "permanent?"
Two new Jefferson Nickels will be made in 2004 and two in 2005. The first was released in March, and the second is going to be released in Aug. The same schedule will be used next year. In 2006 the new Jefferson - Monticello design will come out. That design will be permanent.
The 2004 Peace medallion nickel has been released, and over the course of the year they will make 1.8 million or so nickels with that design and the keelboat design combined. There will be 2 designs for the 2005 nickels, and then a change the becomes somewhat static for 2006 and beyond. All told, there will be four types of nickels for the 2004, 2005 years, and a fifth design appearing in 2006. Hope this helps. Cris
