Nickels with 'extra rim'

I have noticed a couple of Nickels in my collection that appear to have an 'extra rim' almost as if they have been pressed by dies that were a fraction (less than 1mm) too small leaving an extra rim on the coin between the die edge and the collar. Is this a known feature? I assume it is common as I have found these ones. Unfortunately I do not have the means to take or show any pictures of them. Many thanks in anticipation.

    Regards,

    PAB.

It's called an error and it typically holds a higher value than the regular issue

Ok here are the pictures, I see these quite commonly, usualy 1 or 2 a month in my roll searching and can see them affect nearly all years, I never gave them a whole lot of thought but of course, being the nickel nut I am, I pull them put them in 2x2's...

The nickel, as you can see, has an extra rim on one side, however it does not usually extend all the way around and the coin usually appears otherwise normal with a whole and complete rim that encompasses the circumference.. As well a fairly centered strike.

I have not seen any other referance to them until I came upon this old post... I'm guessing its just a slightly misaligned die... But thought I'd throw this one out to the crowd and see if you agree. Good day to ya'll

Yea... Thats kinda why I decided to dig this one up from the dead and bring it to the top! I couldn't help but smile at this fella's explanation, then to top it off no one followed up...lol ... Hmmm... Well give it a scientific name... how about ... error... :mouth: O well ...

Of course, the topic being discussed is not an error at all.
As suggested, it is simply a slightly misaligned die.
It's completely within Mint tolerances, and would never be culled by quality control inspectors.

The error coin below should provide an explaination for why there appears to be two rims.
As you can see, pressure from the strike causes metal to build up against the edge of the die furthest from the collar.

I think Jody is right---misaligned die---I've seen this one almost every type of circulating coin. I think it is interesting but that is about it ;)
