The reverse side of my 1997D nickel has lines rotating out from the center and is larger in diameter than the obverse. (It hangs evenly over the edge by about a millimeter.) I assume it was intentional damage after minting, but can’t figure out what could have created the pattern...with enough force to smash the rim out over the edge evenly, while keeping the pattern of the lines sweeping out from the center.
Yes it is damage.. grinded. The people who do this get better over time. It's an art And since you posted on the What's it worth forum.. 5 Cents
Yes, it has been ground, the grinder displaced the metal toward the edge making the surface larger on the ground side.
