    Hi all,

I recently picked up my first half dime. I noticed in my red book that half dimes and nickels were produced at around the same time. I'm wondering what the difference was between them back then? Were they worth the same amount of money?

    Thanks!

The half dime was produced prior to the nickel five cent piece and was made of silver. The Nickel (five cent piece) derives its name from the material its is made of, thus you can also get a silver 3 cent piece or a 3 cent nickel.

Yes, both had a face value of 5 cents.
