hi, i go through about a box of nickels a week and i'm wondering what i could possibly look for as far as varieties/errors go?

i just look for 39DD (i get about one '39 per box), i save any old nicks.. so i look for those d/s, s/d, etc..
as for the newer ones all i know of is what's in the red book - odd proofs.

    what's even out there?

What would be best is for you to get a copy of the book - The Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties by Bill Fivaz. Then you'll know what's out there.

    Amazon has it for $150

The price of the Cherry Pickers Guide is a little crazy though.

has it at $150.00 on the Amazon... It would take a while to recoup $150.

Maybe you can find a cheaper guide you do a little searching on Amazon. Don't forget free shipping if it is over $25

Oops... I also see it a lot cheaper on Tradewinds I never heard of them, but I found ith through a FROOGLE seach. Good Luck

I bought my copy for $30. That guy on Amazon is nuts and asking a rediculous price. Just look around - the book is available.

I got the cherrypickers book (current issue) off ebay for $14.00. If you look long enough you'll find it reasonable. Happy Hunting! MM

I got mine for under $15....I would save the War Nickels too....since they are silver.

I don't know why it is that lately I have been concentrating on nickels. Must be all the new types out there. Anyway, I save the wartime silver, any 1950D's of course, anything old and in way decent shape, all S mint marks 68 thru 70(i'll eventually cull those), and anything 1959 and older. Don't know if I'll use them all but I always have the option of putting them back in circulation. 1999P's have been showing lots of doubling around the date and mint mark in my area anyway. Nickels are getting a little boring though.

A few Online sites for error coins....

When I am in doubt about a coin, I log on the Heritage Coins web sitee and I can look for some (but not all you seek) there. You can even enlarge the pics and see them clearly.
Another place is www.koinpro.tripod.com/ErrorVarietyList.htm , and another is www.minterrornews.com . Hope this helps. As for Nickles, varietynickles.com cannot be beat!

Not all "double dies" are double dies on late date nickles. An easy way to tell this is to look at the mint mark. If it is doubled like the rest of the coin, then it is not a double die, but hit by the press (that may be worn or a little off center) one or more times, causing a shiny "flat"area that makes the coin look like a double die.
Compare the coin with a true double die, and you can see the difference clearly. Do a search for "coin varetys". Look at the coins closely.
So far, I have found there can be many different errors on a coin, some can be valuable and some a little over face value, But I am NOT an expert, but I attempt to learn something about coins every day. Learn all you possibly can about coins and how they are made, and it will take the boredom out of looking at nickles, and other coins. There are so many Varietys out there that it can be difficult to remember, and when I find a new error, back again I go looking through all my coins.
A wise man said "If you get bored with coins, you are not a true collector". Don't let this happen to you, but I encouragage you to keep looking. Do not give up. You will eventually find what you are looking for if you just keep looking. As an example, it took me 3 months to collect a complete 62-95 Jefferson set, compared to 2 Years to fill a 38 thru 61D Jefferson collection. I am now working in my 2nd 38 thru 61 set, and I have found 24 coins! (Most of my older coins came from below)
Another way is to occasionally change your stratagey. Instead of continusly going to a bank, exchange your coin rolls at a country store. I have found most of my coins here, because many stores are far away from a bank, and they roll and keep their own coins to keep from going to the bank, and only purchace coins when needed or to make a deposit. The last time I went to a country store, they gladly exchanged 2 rolls of nickles, and when I got back home, I found a 39DD Monticello in one roll, and a 39D in the other!
You can go to www.ngc.com and click on a link that says "No Grade Coins" and Heres a place to look for Varities on many coins. >>> http://byersnc.com .

Thats great, But in North Alabama, the "S"series and war nickels are scarce, unless you buy them.
