Happy to share a late stage capped die and tilted partial collar error I rescued from the wild. feel free to share your error nickels!
I am also reluctant to say the coin posted is a Struck with Capped Die. Mostly due to the amount of detail in the hair and the relief of the bust is to high. Apart from that here is a thin planchet coin that weights 3.73 grams.
It doesn’t have the capped die look but it does have the look of a partial collar. Here’s a couple of my struck off center nickels.
The obverse is ghostly and way beyond the point of removing the die from service. There is also plenty of definition of the Monticello reverse. The cap I don't think is a late stage but close. A late stage die cap often times leaves only a small distortion to the striking face. The struck planchet that stuck to the die face is very thin by that point and unless a brockage happens, some kind of die failure, you see little trace of the evidence. I am in on the capped die and partial collar.
I appreciate everyone’s input, as well as the awesome error coins you shared! Having inspected this coin close in hand, and having had Mike Diamond concur (on another forum) with my opinion of capped die and partial collar, I am confident of it being both errors.
Very cool double strike! I found it roll hunting. Pulled it because it was a capped die, later realized it was also a partial collar. Very happy with it
