Nickel Conundrum

    Hey everyone,
I roll hunt (pennies most often), but my recent luck with nickels has got me into those. My issue is that I've never really found anything noteworthy in Loomis rolls, all my good finds have been in other rolls, but EVERY bank box in my area comes from Loomis, I am posting here to find out if anyone else has crap luck with Loomis? Is this just coincidence, or do they actually pick out silver, buffalos, v nickels, etc. If you were me would you keep on keeping on and pick up a box? Or go with the pennies, and buy 10-20 rolls of bank/customer wrapped nickels?

I try to get customer wrapped rolls whenever possible. Those are your best chance at getting something worth holding onto. See if you can get those when you go to a bank. That, or keep looking around. I would also wonder what you are looking for when you speak about nickels. Just older ones or silver?

I use to think they pulled silver, Im less inclined to think that anymore. Unless it is an individual that works there but I seriously doubt they would allow that. If they were pulling silver I would not have found 100- 40% halves and 43- 90% Halves out of 14 boxes.

Mainly silver, buffalos, and (hopefully) a v nickel or 2, also anything pre 1960 that will fill a hole. I keep the 09s as well, I doubt they'll ever have much of a premium, if any, but hey, why not?

It seems that there is a HEAVY demand for '09 nickels and dimes from collectors. In some parts of the country, they are practically non-existent in circulation from what I've been able to gather. I have not had too much trouble finding 2009-D nickels, but finding 2009-P nickels, and ANY 2009 dime is very challenging where I live on the West coast.

Well, I had my "nickel haul of a lifetime" a few weeks ago with LOOMIS nickel rolls. Previously, I hadn't had too much success with them. 94 rolls out of almost 2 complete boxes produced 209 pre-60s including the 38-S and and AU 39-D in my avatar, along with a couple of Buffalos. Interestingly, there were no silver ones out of the 209 coins. I don't recall finding silver in LOOMIS rolls of nickels, but I have found silver in LOOMIS half-dollar rolls. I would definitely grab a box or sample some (get 25 rolls from a teller)...

I like CWR of Dimes and Quarters as they seem to produce more silver than MWR. But I've had much better success in Cents, Nickels, and Halves with MWR. I'm fairly certain there is at least one collector in my area who goes through these three denominations and pulls the goodies.

Some people prefer to make up excuses when they don't find anything good in boxes. Stay away from Loomis rolls! Stay away from N.F. String rolls! Make sure you have a good breakfast to start the day! Yeah, it all makes sense!

I'm in a conundrum as to why they called them nickels when they were 75% (or 56%) copper.

A better name would have been "copickel".

A more sensible name would be "Five Cents"!

Thanks @John77 , I'll have to ask for halves one of these days, and over here I've found 3 09Ps in the past month, no Ds though

No excuses here, just seeing if anyone else that CRH nickels feels the same way. Wouldn't want to waste time searching in vain

You're welcome. I haven't bought halves in a week and a half as I invested some of my roll hunting money into some silver when it dipped to $18.50-ish.

Good luck with the '09 nickels... I have yet to run into a big batch of them. I believe the most I've found in one day was 5. A lot of days I don't find any going through my usual 30-50 rolls.

I totally agree. As they say, "time is money."

When I run into "hot" rolls or boxes, I go to see if there are more of them at the source. It's extremely important to keep track of the bank, the teller, and the type of rolls (LOOMIS, generic, String&Sons, CW, etc.) you get if you want to maximize your finds and chances of stumbling upon something big. When I'm on such a roll, I keep hitting them hard until they run dry. In contrast, when I run into a cold patch, I like to change things up and go to other branches/banks and let other people take the rest of the "cold" rolls/boxes from my main branch.

I also seriously doubt loomis or any other group is cherry picking out of the nickel population. I would just make sure to order from one location, and dump at another. Making that dump location as distant as possible from your order branch.

I have found very few silver nickels, bufs, V's, or '09's. So I tend to avoid nickel hunting if at all possible.

Interesting... I've had my best success in nickels (followed by halves). How much do you search, and what part of the country are you in?

I date search nickels. I hold anything older than 1960. But the processing is exhausting and time consuming. I never buy customer wrapped rolls from banks. Just the fed wrapped boxes.

I find half hunting to be the most rewarding, because of the finds and how easy it is to return the rest to banks.

I've had MUCH better success with MWR/Fed rolls of nickels over the CWR. I'm not sure what would make processing any more exhausting or time consuming than other denominations though. The only denomination that can be a pain to roll IMHO are dimes.

On a per coin basis, halves are probably the most rewarding for me as well. That said, I wish I had the same easy time as you do returning halves to banks. Most of my local ones don't like them or to hold onto them. Fortunately, I've got one branch where I can get my halves ordered and another (smaller) one which will take them from me after I've searched and rolled them, and then ship them off in bags. None of my local banks have coin counting machines.
