i disagree. i see no obvious evidence of tooling.

it is possible that some of the scuffs in the fields have been rubbed out but, i see no signs of it being ''extensively reegraved [sic].''

Just a question from one that knows hardly anything about Bust coins and all,

How are you able to tell when a coin like that is tooled? I see some obvious answers, but are there some certain things to look for on a tooled coin? Thanks for posting the auction Saneman. :thumb:

The upper hair area on Ms. Liberty looks too sharp/wrong to me. Does it look OK to you?

To me the relief around the nose, chin and bottom bust areas appear to be squared off, not rounded as should be the case with a piece this worn.

the example in the op is a draped bust quarter, not a half.

tooling is not exclusive to one particular series...although most toolings are found on ancients, early, low mintage bust series and tougher date morgans.

there are some examples of tooled dollars here

It doesnt look tooled to me, or if it has been, its not extensive. Maybe like said above...some smoothing? but not EXTENSIVE tooling...IMO

I would have to agree that the coin appears to have been tooled.

In the Breen Encyclopedia, the picture of the 1804 shows hair that sweeps down her temple, but this coin it sort of goes horizontal or even a bit up. Very slick job of making it look worn, but incorrectly copied is what it looks like. Mike

    Clearly tooled in upper hair.

It makes it easier to see with the side by side pictures. I think it is through out the hair that was tooled. A nice subtle example of tooling.

its a shame people have to mess around with coins like that. especially rare ones.

it looks extensively tooled to me. Here is a comprably worn coin from a past auction:

This coin actually has less wear than the eBay coin in the op, so everywhere that the eBay coin looks stronger is likely a place where tooling occurred.
