Not sure why the thread is closed. I'll get some coffee and re-read it. But, that's a nice Top 50 Peace dollar you have there Spider. The 23-P looks like a VAM 1A "Whisker Jaw". Norm
How much detail do you want? I collect Morgan and Peace dollar VAMs. There are three lists that VAM collectors reference. The Top 100 and the Hot 50 are for Morgan dollars. The Top 50 book is for Peace dollars, written by Jeff Oxman and David Close. There are two 1923-P VAMs with die breaks at that chin location. Yours looks like a VAM 1A. The other is a VAM 1o, which has a smaller break and a "bar wing" on the eagle's shoulder. The last prices I have (Fall 2004) for the 1A in f, VF, and XF was $48, $49, and $50. Strange break down only a dollar apart. VAM stands for Van Allen and Mallis.. the two guys that wrote the VAM book. Need more?
ooooooo i See it now, thanks man. I gotta pay more attention to these coins, Thanks. Looks like VF to me, how about u?
Here is a listing on eBay of the same coin. It's in mint state, but it will give you a nice picture to compare. I forgot one of my favorite VAM references. Rob Joyce wrote a book called "Fun with 1921" that shows the many different 1921-D Morgans with die breaks. I noticed you have a few 1921's listed in the forum. Can't tell the mint marks from the photos. Always have to check those VAMs. I sold a 1921-D VAM 1AT "Jet O" earlier this year. It went for just under $450. It was an AU coin. Keep your eyes open. I'd love to have that "Whisker Jaw" Peace dollar... but I don't think you should sell a coin from grandma unless it will pay for a house.
Sorry man, it was one of my grandmas favorites The morgans are minted are all Philadelphia, u need better pics???
Nice coin, So spider, are you an error collector now???? It's just a die break, I'll give you $1 for it. Do YOU see the "Two Horns" Now????????
I never said anything bad about ur 2 horned bison, it looks cool and all come to think about it, i got a burn for u but im not gonna say it cause i like ur bison nickel
Sorry Spider, I mixed you up with Speedy. Just tired of getting bashed for collecting (and finding) varieties.
I'm not the most experienced grader. I'd guess at VF25 or so. As a strange coincidence, I just had a knock on the door from the mailman. Had to sign for package from Leroy Van Allen (the VA in VAM). I sent him a couple of Morgans last week. Just got them both back and they are two new VAM discoveries!
My congrats as well, nesvt. It would definatly make my day to get my morgans back from Leroy along with a letter "...... your recent finds are attributed as VAM XXX" Bruce
Way to go nsvt on getting in the VAM listings!!! I have a few VAM errors, all Morgan's and they are some of my most prized error coins in my collection. You'll have to let us know what to look for.
Hey now...I'm not bashing anyone from collecting what they like....yes I do have some varieties...like S/S and D/D and so on...but what I don't care for is die crack that someone will pay for thinking its an extra horn when an extra horn wouldn't look like that...if there was a horn you could NOT see it...maybe if you looked at a live Buffalo you would see what I mean...when you look at a Buffalo from the side you CAN NOT see the horn from the other side...the horns are short and they point up...they don't get to the place there they point sideway and get soooo long that they stick out on the side. Some varieties are real...like the 55/55 cent...or even a Franklin struck on a nickel planchet but a die crack on a 2005 coin isn't going to be worth a thing... I think I heard someone (can't remember who) but said the owner of the coin will ALWAYS think the coin is better and rarer than it is. Speedy
All you need to look for is an understanding and patient wife (spouse/significant-other). My wife tells me I'm spending too much time looking at the same coin ('cuz all Morgans look alike), but she still puts up with me. My favorite VAM discovery was made a couple of weeks ago. I let my wife give it a name ("Beauty Mark") and Leroy Van Allen accepted it. I still liked "Zit Face". I posted a picture here on CoinTalk. Leroy's photo is much better.

Speedy[/QUOTE] Yes I've seen plenty of live buffalos. Maybe the bision is looking partial in the viewers direction, and you can see just the tip of the other horn, but I don't care. I did not make this up the mint did. What else would You name it. The name is very appropirate. I'm an artist and I think it lines up very nicely....some of you guys are going out of your way to degrade my find. Yes this is a REAL ERROR (two horns) with great eye appeal and I bet it WILL carry a premium.
