Where to begin? I got "approx. 300 wheat cents, some indian and steel" for about $25 shipped. They arrived today, just as I was taking my son to the library where there is a large play area for small children in the basement. I took them with. I could not resist temptation (there were some playmates for him today) and I opened them. Upon cursory exam, I was happy to find a 27 D in AU and tucked it safely (I thought) into a flap in my wallet. I picked out the other really BU quality ones, as well as a 21, and put them in my empty pocket, then repacked the rest. I was happy I came home and took care of the regular house stuff before getting back to the wheats. I was going to take a pic for you guys, but alas, my wallet had no coinage. acing: Frantic, I removed everything from my wallet, emptied my pockets, checked the car; nothing. Now I'm very sad I morosely began picking through the remnants of my shattered morale, and with it, the rest of the wheats. I had this glimmer of hope that, even though I know I'd put A penny in my wallet, perhaps I'd tucked away the wrong one. :sniper: Imagine my suprise when good ole Abe winked at me with this beauty! The numismatic Gods hath smiled upon me.... I think it's a solid 45... How about you? And WHEN I find the 27 D, I WILL post it... but this sure took the sting out!!
Is it worth it, though? This one http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=131217&lotNo=20028#Photo PCGS XF45 sold for only $94... Though I think mine is in better shape than than what PCGS calls a 45
I'd send it to NGC and it might come out better than that. Just for the historical significance, that coin is a goodie and deserves a slab.
Update! I found the missing 1927D wheatie! I'd all but given up on it and after all that searching acing: it was right where I stashed it and had already checked for it many times! :rollling:
Those are amazing finds! Don't tell me you bought this random lot on eBay? Because this usually never happens lol.
Oh no, I got them at a local auction There was a 22 no D listed as well but the pics were super blurry and for $60 I couldn't gamble. Glad I went with where I was comfortable!
I just noticed the rim on the reverse at 12 o'clock... railrod rim? Maybe I'll take these pics on over to the error section...
No that looks like a finned rim from a misaligned die. A railroad rim is actually on the edge of the coin and is the result of a partial collar strike.
