Nice Find in '63 Mint Set

Recently I went into the local coin dealer's shop and purchased three mint sets from 1961 - 1963 he had laying around. He informed me that they were illegitimate and that they were cobbled together by a collector who placed business strikes he felt were of reasonably decent condition into the holders. The coins looked very nice to me and I had felt, in my opinion, that I was looking at genuine mint sets so I purchased all three for $58 cash.

Well I brought them home and started inspecting them as I often do with my new finds and I was pleased with what I discovered when I looked over the '63 quarter dollar. I was tickled pink when I saw the '63 25c FS102 under my loupe. As far as I have knowledge of; this variety is found exclusively in United States Mint Sets. I also ended up with a couple of other doubled die varieties and a tripled die reverse Jefferson Nickle.

Here are some photos of the 25c piece. I am proud to say I am actually becoming educated and making much better purchases as a numismatist lately.

I should have taken photos of the obverse and reverse in entirety, but I am gloating instead of looking for opinion in this case. Two of the Franklin half dollars exhibit full bell lines and are beautifully preserved. I'm thinking of sending this particular specimen to PCGS for grading, alongside a 1927S peace dollar that I purchased for just $27. I may repost and include the entire sets for you all to look over. Definitely a smart buy don't you think?

Additionally, I purchased two gold dollars, a type 1 and a type 3, both common dates, but in impressive condition. My dealer said they were AU, as the date on the '51 was faded a little but the luster was unbroken and there was absolutelty no circulation wear. So I made the buy which included a lightly circulated 1909 $2.50 piece. When I took a look at the 1851 and 1883 gold dollar specimens graded by PCGS I grew a little excited when I was making comparisons and reading the footnotes regarding these issues. I wish I had pictures to show you all and I will most certainly be posting on them in the near future.

Needless to say the coins are undoubtedly mint state and I await the return shipment from PCGS, which should (I say should, but in this world nothing is certain) by my calculations be here tomorrow some time as the 21 day turnaround and around 7 days accounted for shipping have passed in total.

I sent them via a 2 day delivery option so I expect them this week at the latest with good fortune.

Sorry about the muddy reverse shots; I need to improve my office lighting by adding at least a decent lamp for photography.
