Couldn't pass it up for fifty buck and I think it vam #59 . Theses are the seller images and heres the link to this vam http://www.vamworld.com/1881-S+VAM-59
Are you sure about the VAM-59? I don't see the notch on the left base of the first "1", nor do I see the die chip in the denticles below the first "8". Chris
Once I receive the coin Chris, I'll check it out and take new images . Should be a fun one to go through the vam list and make sure which correct one it is ..
Heres the link to ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/161777355902?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I have to agree at this point. Also, and as much as I hate to say it, $50 for that coin seems an awful lot. When viewed in hand, or imaged outside of the surely convenient glare, I've a bad feeling impressions will change. My apologies, and questionable variety aside, but $50 for what at best (also debatable) is an iffy gen UNC 81-S is just too much, especially today.
I'm with Books on this one as I don't think it's the VAM , also a super common coin with some iffy pics . Though if you're OK with it what I think doesn't matter . Hope it comes out better than I think .
Well I like to think of it as , if you save a few pocket change 50s , you'd have a lot more to buy a better coin . I mean you can have a collection filled with average coins or a collection with some really nice coins . This is more of a new collector coin and I feel Rick is way past that level .
While certainly entitled to your own opinion, may I ask if you would say the same if this was a new collector, or especially a YN, asking if the coin is solid and the price reasonable? Would you still be on the "pocket change" kick if, as an example, some young fellow had just blown his summer allowance on it, and would it still be "too nice to pass up at that price"? I certainly hope not... Rich buying a coin hoping for a particular VAM is one thing; if he's happy with it, that's great and I respect that, but others do read these threads and try to learn from them. While a highly questionable (i.e., buried) buy may not be a big deal for one person, it very well could be for another. Perhaps this forum would be for the better if everyone understood and respected this simple fact.
Here's what I see here, A very early die state with a very strong strike . Theses are the kinds of coins I like for vams and thats the only reason I bought the coin, or any Morgan dollar . Its all in the hunt for me and there was a new vam added last year . So I know new vams are out there, ready to be discovered . There's only 5 vams with anything to do with a doubled cap ( Vams 59, 63, 68, 68A and 70 ) and 59 is the only one with no images of the doubled cap . So I would say if its not 59, good chance for a new vam here ...
Rick liked it, He bought it. What's the issue? I'm way past that point too but I would have bought that same coin Rick bought at the same price myself.
Perhaps the gentleman is simply trying to present an alternative, and a wiser one at that, particularly for one not wishing to gamble on a variety and/or is more focused on the "bang for their buck". It is pretty clear the gentleman has no "issue" with Rich's decision to purchase, and even said as much in his initial post.
True, but you do have to admit, you came on this forum basically saying the coin is altered ( iffy ) in the images posted, paid to much because the images are altered ( iffy ) and never posted a reason for your reasoning .. Doesn't that sound crazy to you, theres a 14 day return policy on this coin, why would the seller take iffy ( altered ) images for a coin that someone ( I ) would just return .. Think about it ........
If rzage wants to save his fifty's (pocket change) and buy a nicer coin that's fine but he thinks Rick is past that point (of buying an average coin). You think $50.00 was too much for that, (as you called it "iffy"). Rick didn't disclose all of the details of the sale, that's his business. I've spent less than fifty on a nice coin that I wanted. I've saved my fifties until I had enough and then I purchased that $5000.00 coin I wanted. A PCGS graded $2.50 1911-D Strong D AU-58 is not low priced coin. I couldn't afford the MS grade so I settled for what I could. I now have the entire series. The moral of this is buy what you like! And that is what Rick did.
