700 Gold Dollars and a few dozen Double Eagles, most of them have serious corrosion or other blemishes.
from the article posted above, ´The Great Kentucky Hoard” (as it had been designated) includes a group of finest-known 1863 Double Eagles’…. Where does it say corroded double eagles?
Other reports mentioned the damage to the coins, including from farm equipment. And the pics from Lon C (above) show show some very dark blotches, I don't think those are from the mint !
You'll notice that that one only got a "UNC" grade. We don't know if it was "conserved" or if they decided it was not a candidate (although I'm sure they at least washed the fertilizer off). The others pictured in slabs didn't appear to have problems and got regular grades. "Excavation Recovery" is certainly odd if that's intended as a Details grade. From the group shot it seems like a lot of them got that "grade", but many seem to be quite nice.
I was diggin on the medalic alignment, the DDO and the new RPD's that have never been seen before. I need to find a hoard like that.
