A month or two ago I posted some Ben Franklins that I got back from NGC that they graded Artificial Toning, around 15 or so. I cracked them out of the NGC slabs and sent them to PCGS. I said I would let you know how they graded, so EVERY one of the franklins graded MS64 OR MS65 original from PCGS. I have talk to many dealers and they agree that when it comes to toned coins its a 50/50 toss up if they will grade or not. I will now send some more coins to PCGS for grading as I feel with them I have a better chance of getting the toned coins graded fairly.
Congrates on the grades from PCGS, I'm always afraid to send toned coins in and have em come back artificial. I have a roll of 64 proof Jefferson's and one has some light rainbow toning going on and a couple other that look like they are going blue and would love to send them in.
I'll tell ya Box, I think you'll find that over the long haul PCGS is far more inconsistent than NGC is. But I wish ya luck
Congrats to you Box, I remember the coins and they looked good to me. This kind of brings the point that most coins in slabs are the best POSSIBLE grade they could ever achieve. This is why I hate the whole crack out ability of slabbing. Most coins end up in the best possible grade and opinion. I have said before if there was a new slab system that would prevent regrades it would make me feel better about the whole operation. I know secure plus or whatever is supposed to have this, but most coins are not slabbed that way. Chris
Maybe it's just me, but submitting 15 coins to one TPG and then cracking them out of those slabs to resubmit the same 15 to a different TPG seems a bit expensive on something that for the most part can be had for slightly over melt in a many cases.
Based upon my submission experience, I too believe that NGC is more consistent. No prejudice is intended to the other fine grading companies out there.
Well in this case they are both consistent, one company graded them all details, the other all MS, PCGS is much more shifty though, NGC is more reliable, is the gist I get from being in the hobby so far.
PCGS is, in my opinion, the industry standard. Albeit I rarely send in coins to be graded, you better believe that I trust PCGS over NGC.
Hi, Might want to check your price as a 1953-s Franklin sheets for $225. I think this is a little above melt.
As i said earlier bid on MS 65 Franklins is quite a bit over melt and full bell lines even more, but do not take my word for it watch some major auctions like heritage or teletrade because without them being graded you would be correct because unslabed Franklins bring just over melt.
Neither I, nor you stated anything about either TPG saying any of your halves were FBL, nor did I say anything about FBL Franklins can be had for slightly over melt. I agree FBL ads a premium; however, 64 and 65 no FBL graded Franklins, 58-63 can be found for slightly over melt. I picked up a 58D, NGC graded 65 for $22.50 just the other day, currently silver closed today at $41.83. and I've seen quite a few 58-63 dates for slightly over melt, especially proofs; slabbed or raw.
Some folks like Chevys, some like Fords. Me? No way would I ever choose NGC over PCGS. It's not just because PCGS generally earns a higher price when selling. Or that time and again we see smart collectors with ultra-valuable coins cross them to PCGS, knowing the grades will likely suffer. For me it is about their guarantees. PCGS has come through a dozen times. NGC, never. Not once. Inconsistent grading? NGC is just as guilty as PCGS. Opinions vary. Ever see a movie you didn't like the first time and did the second? Lance.
I have to agree, especially on toned coins. NGC is VERY quick to reject a toned coin or one they susepct as "artificial color". I've seen PCGS accept quite a few coins that NGC rejected and NEVER vice-versa.
Having them graded by PCGS turns out to be great for you, but what if I'm the next buyer and NGC was right?
And what if NGC was wrong? Since PCGS guarantees the coins they grade I feel more comfortable have ALL my coins graded by PCGS from now on and I will always wonder about coins from NGC as if their over graded or graded wrong. Ounce you have a bad experience its harder to trust someone ever again.
Ahh .. that' s NT for sure ... what was NGC thinking? Hey BoxElderCoin, when you subitted these to PCGS ... did you send the coins into PCGS in the NGC GENUINE slabs ... or did you crack the coins out of the NGC slabs and send the coins in raw (loose) to PCGS?
