What category do silver rounds fall into to? If it honors a person, place or event or it's struck for artistic purposes, it's probably a medal. Even if it is cheesy.
Silver rounds fall into same category as 1oz silver bars. The definition of a medal should be more strict. Not every piece of something should be considered a medal. Just my opinion.
Ah, but it gets better. What do call something from a coin club commemorating Coin-O-Rama on one side and Good for 25c (it was 1962) on the other side. Is that a medal or token?
I believe any piece that commemorates an event in the present day is also a souvenir piece which are classified, at least by Alpert & Elman as tokens. So I would call it a token on both sides. But with a dark shadow looming over it. LOL
I tend to think of medals as being issued by some governing body to an individual or entity for merit - like an award.
In the same book it gives the definition of a medal as: "A coin-like object not issued as a circulating money substitute. It is usually a commemorative, award, good luck, or souvenir item." Apparently a souvenir piece can waffle between token or medal.
So I guess I'm back to the same question. If the Coin-A-Rama side can be called a medal and the Good for 25c side a token, then what is it--medal, token, mongrel, inflammatory Luddite?
