Which one? i can send my coins to NGC if i am a member of the ANA, and since i am a YN, i only have to pay $26 a year, versus NGC's 39, and PCGS' 49. i am leaning towards NGC, is there any reason (besides the value of the coin) i should choose one over the other? Why? NGC seems a cheap way to go, but what are the cons? what are the pros for PCGS? Thanks! ~Michael.
This is one of those topics that has been discussed a million times and still no clear consensus has been reached. PCGS's services are the most expensive to begin with and typically, PCGS coins will fetch higher resale prices. A lot of people believe that PCGS has an edge all around; but I just don't see it. As for as pro's and con's between NGC/PCGS as a whole, I think we're just splitting hairs. They have different standards for different designations in different series, and even at times different names for the designations e.g. Franklin's, Mercury Dimes, Jefferson Nickels. If we look at it from a series specific standpoint, we may get a different TPG "winner" with each series depending on one's own standards. For example, in my personal experience, PCGS does a better job of grading pre 1933 gold. Somebody else's experience may say otherwise. At the end of the day grading is a subjective process, even with standards put in place. Long story short, I've done business with both companies, and either company is just fine to send your coins into. If you're looking to save money now, go with NGC. If you're looking to perhaps have a higher resale value, go with PCGS.
Most people will tell you that coins in PCGS slabs generally sell for more, but you will have to weigh the initial expense against the possible rewards. If your coins are relatively common, I doubt that a PCGS slab would help that much. With that in mind, I think most people will tell you that NGC definitely has the best customer service. Chris
I think it also depends on the types of coins you want to submit. It is known that PCGS is tougher on some coins and NGC is tougher on others.
Thanks! NGC it is! in all reality, even though pcgs coin sell for more, they are more expensive, so your net profit is either the same, a little less, or a little more. with NGC, you might make a little less cash, but they are cheaper. so, i will join the ANA, 26 dollars a year for the YN, and i get to send in coins to NGC! Thanks! ~Michael
The "collector" which lives within each of us has a tendency to want "order" and the primary reason that I do not use NGC as a grading service is that their "slabs" are different than the rest of my PCGS Slabs. My OCD simply could not "live" with that glaring discrepancy! They all have to be THE SAME!!! MUuaahhhahahahahah
It looks like you're trying to save like $20-$25 membership fees a year, is that correct? Is that the main reason for your decision?
You have not even mentioned what type of coins you primarily want to collect although more than one person told you it really depends on the type of coins. E.g. I always thought ANACS was preferred by Morgan collectors just to give an example...
all types! LOL, really, i want to send in a few nickels, wheat cents, and my mom wants to send in a few morgans
You might want to post pics of the coins here before you send them in...just to make sure they don't have any major issues.
You are aware that they might not come back as good as you would expect...? My first submission was a nightmare - details grades on almost all slabs...
Buying: I want NGC, more conservative grades. Selling: PCGS: more liberal grading, better prices. [Note: The above is not true of the Newman coins that sold recently. They generally down graded at PCGS, but that could have been spite.]
micbraun & CamaroDMD have provided good advice. Post photos here or discuss the coins with a trusted dealer before you spend money on a TPG opinion.
I think both have their good and bad days. What I have found from my limited experience is that upon resale or trade, a dealer will look at a PCGS label only but on NGC they will look at the label then study the coin. In my circles at least PCGS is easier to sell without any problems. With that said, I've seen plenty of PCGS that I question the grade on. For fun, check out the Heritage Auction site. It could be a weird fluke but of hundreds of coins, past and present auctions I've looked at they will usually show you 4-5 recent results. Almost always PCGS comes higher than NCG. Could be a fluke but almost every time that's the case and sometimes by substantial margins for same grade.
just shows how many nut cases there are out in the world. maybe they think cause' its expensive they are better at it??
No, they think PCGS is stricter than all the others and a PCGS coin - especially those in older slabs - would upgrade when submitted to any other grading company.
