Saw this on eBay this evening. LOTS of people tracking the auction. I can't imagine why NGC would allow this barnacle to attach itself to them. https://www.ebay.com/itm/PERU-1710-...PIRATE-TREASURE-COIN-JEWELRY-COB/292643673131
What do you suppose the front of the NGC insert says under that black label that's stuck to the outside of the slab? (Not that I can imagine it says anything that would protect NGC's reputation from this insult...)
It says "COPY" on the reverse. Yet still it's very shady for NGC to slab this repro. The """coin""" in the slab is really worth a few cents at best.
How do we know this is an NGC endorsed product? Anyone can get a fake slab and foil NGC sticker from China. It doesn't have a NGC number, the font is incorrect and the design of the label isn't consistant with NGC.
It looks like there's a black label stuck to the outside of the slab, covering what would be the NGC front label. Still doesn't seem like something NGC would get involved with, though.
Unless there are pictures that i missed i doubt there even is an NGC label underneath the sticker. A cursory glance at a certain chinese retail website gave me many results for NGC and PCGS "style" slabs. Imo, this seller is just using the NGC name to try and add legitimacy to their product. I'd be happy to be proven wrong if NGC in fact are slabbing junk like this.
It's in a slab. I don't see any suggestion/proof that it's certified (no Cert number, no grade, etc.) In no way to I see this as an endorsement by NGC of this item. If it had a bar-code and a grade it would be considered "certified by NGC". I don't believe this item, as currently "packaged" qualifies for that description. On an aside, why would this be a problem even if it were in a graded slab? There are lots of non-coins in NGC (and all other TPG company) slabs. This could be classified as a "token" or "medal" or "fantasy" strike - the label clearly states "Private Issue - Struck 2018".
Lots of folks collect replica coins both marked and unmarked. TPGs don't have a reputation to protect. They no longer honor their original guarantees and will slab anything for a fee. Witness the TV coin sellers with their FIRST STRIKE MS-70 tokens or those autographed by designer specials. When they first showed up they put their money where their mouth is and bought their mistakes. Now you have the possibility of fake coins in fake slabs to deal with.
I agree with @brg5658 As long as the label says what it is, there isn't much issue slabbing it. In fact, NGC adding all the info to the slab (private issue, gold plated, etc) helps potential buyers know it is not real gold and is a modern item.
Here's another nice mess you got me into! Just a bit of humor to lighten the day, have a nice one everybody! Be safe.
The young man selling these items is named "J.R. Bissell" - makes me wonder, are you related? Almost too much to be a coincidence.
Why have they done it ??? Simple reason dollars and cents. I have never and will never send a coin to be slabbed just to line someone else’s pockets, I grade all my own coins
Usually the little rectangular ⚖NGC® is on the front with the barcode and reference number. The back of the holder is a large security hologram. I have not seen an example of a current generation NGC holder that does not fit this standard.
Calm down folks. It's highly unlikely this is an NGC slab... https://www.wish.com/product/58666c...v_D_BwE&hide_login_modal=true&share=mobileweb
Not a close relative if that is his name. Less than 2000 Bissells in last census and we all got here in 1628. Only one group uses ad hominem attacks. Thanks for identifying yourself.
