I'm curious (an a bit worried) about this one. You apparently feel there's some damage or problem with the coin as stated in another thread...which would call the grade of 70 into question...and now can not verify the cert number? I'll be following this one with interest...
I am far from an expert on halves, but my guess is that is a fake slab. I am pretty sure I can see flaws on that coin and those prongs are about 1/2 the width of what NGC uses. Were I you, I would call NGC and see what they have to say about it. I am sure they will want to know where you bought it and I am sure others here would be interested.
Here is a comparison from a similar slab. You can tell whether there's differences in the slab. Mine is a 1982 No MM dime.
Here's one on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1998-S-S-Si...54?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item256ca30cea
That one has the same invoice number, also can not be verified... And hrmm...the pictures look "familiar".
It's possible that they are running behind on updating the cert #'s, and this may have been a recent submission. I had a submission last year that didn't register for about two weeks. Maybe you should call NGC to verify it.......800-642-2646. Chris
I am in agreement with Chris on this one. It's about the only way you will learn where you stand on it. I wasn't able to get a good enough blow up of the pic to offer an opinion. But try stacking it with some other newer NGC slaba and see how they match up. gary
Didn't know this was possible...I thought they updated the cert db before they send the coins back. Good info, thanks!
Was just going to say, I've never seen that label before. You almost can't keep up with the label changes now. What's with the rank number?
Hello Peter Lapisu, #1 Welcome to CoinTalk & I look forward to your posts. #2 It looks like someone submitted a few similar coins to NGC because you have coin #3 and the other Ebay listing is the same number except it was coin #1 I think. Just call NGC tomorrow morning & let us know what they say about the coin & grade. They are great people to work with at NGC IMO. #3 You might want to pick a more anonymous name like PeterL or something. In an open coin forum you don't want to make it too obvious or easy for the criminals to ID you. You could ask a moderator to change it or you could just stop using it & create another I think. Again, welcome to the forum.
Try this: On Kasia's dime, the barcode starts on the far left, the originally posted JFK's slab has it start indented and end on the far right. NGC also has no record for the cert #
I guess they needed to be ranked?? I wouldn't have thought there was 100 modern U.S. coins to rank. Not really interested in this program.
They are probably behind. If you call them they should not only give you a direct answer, but can tell you the date it was slabbed, which can give you a better idea. I can tell you some characteristics of fake slabs from years back; the "-" in certification number isn't slanted the sonic welds are inconsistant and gap through integrity is spelled wrong on hologram knowledge is spelled wrong on hologram Now ofcourse, counterfitters get better everyday, i'm just going off of what i know about counterfit ngc slabs. If anyone has any updated information to detect counterfit slabs, i would like to know myself.
