NGC box with old gold logo

Does anyone recognize this old NGC box that I recently obtained from a retired coin store owner? The gold logo appears to place it in the early days of NGC. I tried to fit an old pre-hologram NGC slab inside, and it did not work in any orientation. The size is about right for a 2x2 box, with outside dimensions of 9 1/2" long, 2 1/4" high, and 2 3/8" wide. I am hoping that one of the many members knowledgeable about the third party graders recognizes this item.

I have seen these in the past but never thought much about it. Maybe something used in the grading process to keep everything straight. Just a guess.

This is just a guess, but maybe boxes like this were used by auction houses like Heritage or Stacks to transport consignments to shows. Several years ago, I recall getting a bunch of unmarked, red boxes that were used by Stacks at the FUN Show.

Wasn't "Old Gold" a cigarette brand?

I like it, I mean I REALLY like it. And it was possibly used in the early years for shipping submissions at shows back to NGC in 2X2 holders (before they started going to 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 flips. Or as Idhair said used in-house to transport submissions to the graders.

By the way I'm stealing the image.

    Yes it was.

First generation black holders are basically the same size as the current holder.

Thanks, I'm glad you find it interesting. I promised another slab enthusiast first right of refusal when it (probably) comes up for sale.

Help yourself to the image, of course, Conder. You are welcome to the images in any of my work - let me know if you need larger photos.

I now know what this box is, learning the same information from two reliable sources on the same day: CoinTalk regular illini420 and an NGC representative at Long Beach. This was used in-house to organize submissions before they were graded.
Thank you to everyone who responded
