Hey guys, I recently bought a NGC 1878 8 tail feather morgan dollar. Its very nice MS 62. I started looking at closeluy again last week & noticed some small die breaks & "marks". I started to research in to the possibility of a VAM variety coin. Im 99% sure its a VAM 1-spear point VAM. Its has all the marks that is described on the VAM World website. Now to my questions, I have several. Why was this VAM not "noted" on the NGC case? Is a VAM variety a service that requires a extra fee or a special request when submitted? Do grading services always look for VAM variety on morgans? With this VAM, is this coin worth re-submitting to NGC/PCGS for the additional text added to increse the value? Thanks so very much for any insight you may have to answer my questions here. I tried to get pictures on the coin, but could not get enough detail to show the VAM "features". Im new to the VAM variety & find it quite interesting. THANKS
NGC does charge to attribute the coin on the holder. Here is the info for this: http://www.ngccoin.com/VPSubCategory.aspx?subid=23 Now let's see a picture of that beauty!
Here the coin! The obverse is very "proof like". I think it's a great example of the 8 tail feather variety.
Is a VAM variety a service that requires a extra fee or a special request when submitted? - Yep, like flyers said it's an extra fee, plus additional paperwork. Do grading services always look for VAM variety on morgans? -Nope, only if you pay for the attribution fee. Also note that NGC and PCGS don't attribute every VAM. With this VAM, is this coin worth re-submitting to NGC/PCGS for the additional text added to increse the value? -NGC will attribute all 8-tf varieties, but if it's a VAM-1, imo, it's really not worth the cost of attribution/shipping to get the VAM noted on the slab.
You are so right. Once the chance of it being a VAM crossed my mind, it was truely fun to research it & figure it all out!
one more question is you could raider34. For a coin to fall into a VAM category/variety does it need to met ALL of the noted attributes? Thanks again for your info here.
