Those of you who know these SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE types know just how scrappy they can get, so when I saw this little gem going with no watchers or bidders, I had to give it some love. The legends are a bit weak, but the bust and Victory are razor-sharp. This coin has none of the issues that so many of the type seem to suffer from: uneven strikes on poorly-trimmed flans, lousy centering, etc.
Well that's one LRB I'd love in my collection, as you said nice centering, flan, and strike. One heckva coin!
Nice, well struck coin. I own a few and the ones I own seem to be fairly well struck as well (not near as nice as your example). Here is one of the same Emperor, but from a different mint: And is here is of Valens from Siscia
Wow, JA => that's certainly a super-crisp lookin' Valentinian!! (congrats!!) ... your coins rock too, Bing!! *sigh* ... all I have is this poor ol' example (my first ancient, ever) ... but man, I need to buy more coins!! Good score, JA ... sounds like you'll be able to flip that baby for a cool profit, eh? (or are you gonna keep that prize?)
Well looks like you did better than most Steve. I still haven't bought any, hopefully I'll get one at tomorrow's show.
I always keep them long enough to learn something. I just started reading RIC X, and I mean really reading it - not just skimming and looking up a few attributions. So I'll probably collect a few more Valentinian types and get a good first overview of his coinage before I let anything go.
