I won two coins in yesterday's Agora auction, both ex RBW collection. The first one I'm sharing(because the second is an anomaly and I still need research time) is the following triens with a "staff" symbol from the anonymous Crawford 106 "staff and club" series minted in Etruria during the Second Punic War. The series that this coin belongs to is a complex series which includes coins with symbols(various variations of a staff and/or club) and coins without any symbol but which are linked both stylistically and via hoard evidence to the varieties with symbols. Because of the complexity of the series, these are often misidentified and even in the plates for Crawford there are coins which should've been linked to this series that aren't.

Unfortunately, this particular coin has some patina problems, but I am hoping it will be one that is better in-hand(as I am often surprised by bronzes), but even if not, it didn't cost much and has a visible symbol which is exactly what I was looking for, so it is a nice way to begin my collection of this particular series.

Man, I love that coin. I'm glad you won something. I didn't, mostly because I found out I have to take a few more hundred dollars worth of continuing education credits...so any interest in bidding high suddenly went out the door.

I'm glad at least one of us here at Cointalk won something interesting to share with the rest of us. Thank you for the history on that coin. It was a very nice post.

Thanks, Sallent. I got lucky with this one as well as the other one that I won. Both hammered at the opening bid. I wasn't planning to buy anything else this month but when I saw that there were a couple of interesting bronzes getting no bids I couldn't help myself.

Nice score, red! Eh...the coin has a little mineral snot stuck to it, no big deal. :)

Speaking of the RBW collection, I viewed his book collection at NYINC, but came up empty-handed in the auction - too rich for my blood! Well, I did come away with a very pretty catalog.
