Wow, that's a sharp piece, T. Kudos! The only issue I have with my denarius is the lack of rudder detail, but in my eyes the overall merits of the coin outweigh the weak rudder.

Very nice Emesa minted coin with plenty of detail. Congrats.

My only Emesa minted coin is a S. Severus, but lacking in detail like yours.

Congrats JA => great new Sep-Sev addition!! => super eye-appeal!!

Ummm, please don't tell Martin and/or Doug, but I only have "1" Septimius Severus denarius in my entire collection!! (oh, but I don't think that it's from Emesa ... I'm pretty sure that it's mint is Roma?)

... but since I only own this one, I still want to play along ...

Thank you for the comments, friends. My interest in this coin had little to do with the toning, however - it's a bit too much for my taste. Perhaps it won't be so dark in hand.

What did interest me was the grade of the coin for its type, but I wish I had more specimens to compare it to. There are a couple for sale on vcoins that grade F and below. The example on Wildwinds is maybe a gF, and there's one listed on acsearch, sold by FORVM, that's positively decrepit. My coin stands head and shoulders over that small sample, but it would be instructive to see more pieces of the type.

But I believe the coin holds its own, compared to the overall grades and values of the generally scarce Emesa denarii, and I don't believe I overpaid for it. And if I did, well...c'est la vie. This one stays in my permanent collection.

=> that's a very wise decision (congrats, JA)

That's a super coin, Chris - that's how I like 'em: nice and shiny. Maybe I'll give mine a dip.

That is a very appealing Septimius, JA.
(please please do not dip it, it looks great the way it is)

I gotta agree with this. Mine thats posted is pretty dark but I really like it that way.

I also like the OP toning alot and would be shocked at the thought of removing a lovely tone.

It is one F away from being a perfect coin. The reverse is a common type but very few approach being this nice. I have several of the reverse but the best has more wear than yours.
