Some spirited bidding on The Cape Coral Collection of Multiple Talers today. One comprehensive collection of multiple Talers (mostly German) ranging from 2 to 10 (!!) Taler denominations. I lost on my bids, yet then threw in a reasonable offer for the Harz piece which seldom shows up in mint state. Nice and original. The second piece bought outside of auction is a scarcer Austrian shooting medal held during Franz Joseph's reign. Harz. ND (1701-67). Baptismal Taler. Katsouros-10A. DAV-2935. Obv: Christ being anointed by John the baptist in the river Jordan, Biblical quotations around. Rev: Biblical quotations in 10 lines and in margins. A beautifully toned presentation piece which retains much underlying luster. NGC MS-62. From the Cape Coral Collection of Multiple Talers 1883. Emperor Franz Joseph I (1848-1916) 3rd Lower-Austrian Shooting Competition in Baden. 34mm, 17.31gr. Vienna mint. Engraved by F. Leisek. Austria 2014: Hauser: 5119. Obv: Seated togate female figure (Tyche, city goddess), wearing turreted crown, holding shield of Lower-Austria and wreath. Imperial eagle perched on target to her left. Exergue: LEISEK. Rev: Coat-of-arms of Baden within wreath. Legend: * III. NIEDERÖSTERR. LANDESSCHIESSEN IN BADEN 1883. Exergue: "3rd Lower-Austrian shooting in Baden, 1883"). NGC MS-64.
No interchangeable - just a result of the 1902 spelling reform in Germany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thaler
Great.. thanks for the info. I have a 1863 German States Thaler I'm planning to send to NGC to get certified. I love the details and overall designs such as the items you posted. Here is my Thaler -
And another older purchase that I wanted to update - a fractional Taler of a scarcer emperor type in such quality. The image is NGC's website type image. Austria. 1758-HA. Francis I (1745-1765) 1/2 Taler. Herinek 201. KM-2036. Tirol. Hall Mint. Beautiful toning on the scarcer half taler type. NGC MS-63.
