I've wanted to collect one of these for a while, but I guess they're quite scarce - I've only seen a handful for sale and all of them had very serious problems. I'm guessing the quality control was rather poor on these issues? At any rate, the stars aligned last night and I managed to win this coin at a reasonable price. Yes, it's rather scrappy, but it's the best forward-facing portrait I've found on the bronzes of Honorius...
Me too, and finding those forward-facing portraits of Honorius and Arcadius is easy enough on solidi, but they're not exactly in my budget.
Someone on another forum recently posted one of these. I didn't know these were issued in bronze-- LIKE LIKE LIKE. Yours is the best I've seen. (OK, I've only seen three but still-- nice coin!)
Seeing only three isn't unusual. I've been looking for a decent example for half a year, and I've seen maybe six...
Wow-wow-wow => that is a very cool addition, JA (it's very interesting!!) ... atta-boy!! (keep us guessing, eh?)
nice one JA...in i shopped for a forward facing honorius or arcadius in my last bout of coin buying but could find one i could afford that looked nice. yours certainly looks nice.
Thanks Chris. Speaking of Arcadius, this little AE4 was a part of the same lot. Nothing special, but again, these late late Romans rarely come in higher grades...
that's one of the better ones i've seen JA...not that i've seen many..but very nice. those are usually pretty rough.
Well, Honorius arrived today and I must say I'm absolutely thrilled with this coin. I'll post a pic of the Arcadius when I get a chance...
It is not just the facing coins that suffer quality control problems in this period but those small things must have been hard to make.
lovely coin JA........ the lot of 10 or so late bronzes i mentioned with one of these in it went for £250 or more.
Here's the Arcadius, also exceptionally good for the type, now that I've had a chance to compare it to others on the web. Such a small bust on such a small coin - the bust itself measures only 6x4mm...
