Another 50k mintage piece. This one is done in a satin proof to celebrate the millienium change. However after speaking with some dealers local to Uruguay, it seems that these ended up in circulation. The face value is in line with the price of silver at the time. This one is 90% with 0.72xx/oz in silver content. Beautifully unique piece IMO.
One of the many features I find cool about these is that there is no rim. Its just an edge all the way around like a little silver disc. It has edge lettering as well which reads in spanish "Change of the Millenium"
I'll take some edge shots tonight. The reverse has mixed convex and concave devices. The moon and sun for example are convex. Not sure if concave is correct here but many of the devices are in relief as the fields around them sink and they then relief out, convex relative to their sunken fields...on the obverse the spiral leads the metal down into a concave field for the cross....is that the right terminology?
Here's the edge as requested/promised. It reads "Cambio de Milenio" twice around in opposite orientation.
I'm glad you've been posting Uruguay coins because they are definitely eye-catching! I've never seen them before and I think they are stunning!:thumb:
That's a very interesting rimless edged coin. Thanks for posting the side photo. Really interesting designs.
Uruguay has a lot of nice issues and with a population of only 3.5 million people today, many of the issues are fairly low mintage. I think there is value there, especially with the silver coinage as many of it can be had at a little over spot in UNC grades.
