Never seen one of the things in my life. It looks like a very nice design and a nicely toned example to go along with it. What is the composition of the coin? Also if you don't mind me asking what was the purchase price?
It is 90% silver. Same content and comp as the morgan/peace dollars. I believe they were struck at US mints(San Fran maybe?) Mintage is 50k. This one is in an MS65 Anacs holder though I have no idea how to grade these so I'll assume it's overgraded. I paid 99$ for it. Ive got another one youve probably never seen coming a little later
Thanks. There was another great looking Balboa up for sale on ebay in an NGC 64 holder, still there im sure. I think it was probably an undesignated PL Cameo coin. Really nice luster as the toning was not as dark as this one, kinda golden. But the seller had it listed for 450$ which obviosuly wasnt going to happen. I talked to him for a bit and he eventually changed his auction to 250, still not gonna happen. I saw what he paid for it and I dont think he was going to get much more than that. Had they both been available for the same price I probably would have chosen the other one, but I think this coin was a bargain in relation especially if its a true 65 as you say.
Not really knowing the market for these can't say that is good or bad, but $99 doesn't seem that expensive for a beautiful coin like that.
Thanks. I am feeling better about the purchase not the liking the coin itself part, I just hate overpaying, especially not knowing the series, and I really dont think I did on this one.
Well, it's in an old ANACS holder, not an OGH but still adds character all by itself! I think whether you overpaid is highly debatable. You may have gotten a steal of a deal, see how you feel about it in a few days or so!. The key is only 50,000 minted! Is there something different on his cheek other than a regular non=1953?
As far as I know the only obv difference is the V/U but I;m not entirely sure. I need to look at the other dates more carefully.
I think the only reason I feel that way is that Krause has a list price for BU of 40$. Otherwise 99 does not seem like much for the nice toning this one has.
Beautiful piece and I have found that the grading on the old ANACS mini holders to be quite accurate. It looks MS65 to me, and it looks good in the holder.
BINGO!!! The toning is something you wont find on another Balboa. Wish'd I saw it theres a coin Im looking at now that I have never heard of
It's a very nice Balboa, here's a pic of one of mine and it's a 1993. I got almost a whole page but no 53, yet! I'm terrible at taking pics but you see the difference on the cheek area?
Oh you mean different from the bullion releases. That I dont know. All I know is there were 3 releases (31, 34, and 47) released as business strikes all with mintages in the 100-200k, then this 53 as a commemerative but that circulated. Then the bullion is all over the years. There is also a 31 proof with a mintage of 20!(all this according to Krause which may or may not be correct)
I think you got a good deal, and I just realized mine is a half Balboa! Yours must be the size of a Morgan or close to it! thumbs up on that one!
Yup, same size weight and silver content as the morgans. I am doing a themed box of 20 where the theme is 20th century crown sized silver coins that I consider the nicest designs. I will be albuming the coins here for now: http://www.omnicoin.com/collection/mumu
