Hi there, I have a Newfoundland 50 cent piece. I have a hunch that it is the wide 9's variety but am not sure. Anyone have any opinions? Ohhh and also could someone give me input on the grade of this coin? I was thinking VF+ maybe XF ?? Check out the pics & thanks !!!
I don't know much about that particular coin, but I LOVE that Queen Victoria design! Nice looking coin with a lot of detail left!
Thanks ! That means a lot. I really like these coins too and have been recently collecting them as much as possible. They can get pretty pricey though, espcially for the 1800s ones.
I did a little reading on this one, you definitely have the wide-9 variety. I'd grade it VF-25. I think there's a bit too much wear to be higher. A lovely coin -- looks like these go for very strong money. Very nice coin!
PS -- I was going to mention -- you should come join us in the World & Ancient coin section for a coin like this. It seems that some of the well versed Canadian collectors spend a lot of time there. World coin posts get lost in the "CoinChat" forum often. Also, welcome to the site! Hope you like it here...
Great..thank you sir. And thanks for the heads up with the ancient coins section - to be honest, I was pretty confused as to where I should be posting haha.
Thanks! Good to know...I think I was really pushing it hoping for XF. Anyway thanks and nice coin to you too (since it looks about the same as mine haha)
Welcome the forums ashikunn! Definitely a wide 9 - if you look at the interior circles of 9 on yours they're round; on the narrow 9 they'd be oval. Like this: Think the grade is closer to F12-F15 though- mainly due to the wear on the braid around the ear, the ear and the laurel leaves merging together. Anyway just my opinion, nice coin regardless.
Great ! Thanks for finalizing that. I can totally see that it is the wide 9 variety now. And yes I was a bit worried about the heavy wear on the braid too..Was hoping it'd still pull off something higher than Fine though haha
