According to the Krause book, the lowest mintage non-gold Newfoundland coin in all of the 1800s is the 1885 dime. With only 8,000 minted, I was pleasantly surprised to find this one. Here are the mintage figures for the Newfoundland dimes:

    Date and Number minted
    1865 80,000
    1870 30,000
    1872 40,000
    1873 20,000
    1876H 10,000
    1880 10,000
    1882H 20,000
    1885 8,000
    1888 30,000
    1890 100,000
    1894 100,000
    1896 230,000

For some reason, the 1870 is listed in Krause as being more expensive than the 1885. I’m sure that one of our Canadian experts can explain why this is. Heritage has sold three 1885 in EF & one in VG. (They also sold an MS65 for $8k). I’m thinking this one is maybe a VF35. I’d certainly like to learn more about the Newfoundland dime series & this 1885 from our Canadian experts.

    Very best regards,

P.S. This coin is from the same old time collection. I look forward to getting some nice Canada coins soon.

Here are a couple different photos. I don't know the series but I am thinking VF35.

VF 35 at least, a very nice catch! I've been buying up any Newfoundland coins I happen upon at shows, I love 'em!

Are those mintage figures similar to the ones from coins made for usage on the British mainland?

If so, they only indicated the number of coins minted for that year, not the number minted with that date in that year, that's the reason for the disparity in values.

    PCGS says it is XF45.

I finally got this 1885 thing graded by a TPG. PCGS says it is XF45.

Older Newfoundland coins in better condition have been rising in value steadily for the past two years, and in my opinion are still undervalued.

I was going to say XF-40 on the 1885, but getting XF-45 from PCGS is just incredible. Congratulations on that!

A friend of mine has assembled a nearly complete Newfoundland collection over the past few years, including some key, low mintage issues. I'm not sure if he has an 1885 10c though. And if he does I doubt it's certified XF-45.

    Here's my one Newfie coin...

Anyone care to try and guess the grade that NGC gave this?

    Swag

I had never seen one of those coins before. 100 Pence / 200 Cents is wild. AU 57.3 ?

I suppose it could be graded MS 62.

AU-57.3 is pretty close. NGC gave it AU-58.

If it was MS-62 I would have never been able to afford it...
