Here it is guys, my first gold coin. Its a 1906 $5 dollar Liberty. Tell me what you think. Paid $175 for this beauty.
nice! Thats great, there is nothing like gold coins. just the feel is something special. very nice coin, congrats and I hope you can get many more. PS... about the time I say how great it looks someone will bring up the conterfeit Question!!
A beautiful stunnign counterfeit... but hey .. just kidding..i had to do it just because vipergts2 said so Still a gorgeous coin!!!
From the pics..that coin looks AU55 to me...hard to tell cuz it is out of sharp focus. If it is then you got a great deal!! List's for about $240 in AU. Anyone else care to estimate the grade?? Nice coin RickieB
Looks like there might possibly be a slight rub, but a very nice addition! I go high AU. Very nice Kevin. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: What I think is you should send her to me. Hey, you wanted to know what I think. Lol, all joking aside, a very nice piece. Are you doing a set of these? Phoenix
Kevin. I hope you know that once you go down that yellow road there is no return you will never be the same. Bruce.
Kevin, that is a very nice gold coin you have got there. It is like a work of art, because of the time & effort that was spent in engraving the dies. Aidan.
Thanks guys, the dealer had it marked AU but didnt assign a number to it. I'd give it an AU55 myself. Im not really planning on doing a set of these right now. I just walked up to the guys case and it instantly caught my eye and I told the wife I had to have it. I think you're right Bruce, I believe I've been bit by the "gold" bug..lol
Very nice,i have a small collection of the $5 libs, great coin to collect. I agree definItly AU coin at a bargin price. ENJOY
Nice coin....with some lovely lustre in the legends and around the portrait, I am thinking of getting one of those !
A small dealer was set up at a flea/antique market in Thomasville, PA. We ran across it on our way home from Lancaster this weekend.
Looks like nice honest circulation wear. To me the front looks to be around au-53, with the reverse being a 55. Overall I'd call it a 53+. I can't really tell from the photos, but I don't see anything to make me think it may be counterfeit. For 175 I think you got a very good deal. Congrats!
Now you need a $10.00 and a $20.00 to keep it company ..and then you need to get an Indian ..and then a Saint. The next thing you know you will have spent $3,100.00 and you will have filled in the Gold page of your 7070. It happens to all of us who collect gold.
Thats how I feel Vic. I have one, now I want more. Like Andrew289 said, now I'll want the indian and the saint. Now that I have one and am able to hold it, in its 2 by 2 of course, and look at it closely, I can see where I could easily become commited to building a gold type set.
You did great at $175.00 I saw a nice 1897 at a tag sale but the guy wouldn't sell it. His father-in-law owned a store and a customer came in and paid off his account with a $5 gold piece! It was passed down to the guy's wife. My 1881 has a mintage of 5 million, 700 thousand. Your 1906 has a much lower mintage at 348 thousand.
